Director of Racquet Sports
Club in Locust Valley, NY is looking for a full-time Director of Racquet Sports. Competitive salary, medical, dental, 401(k) with match and more.

Position Overview:
Club, founded in 1911, is a full-service Country Club located on the North Shore of Long Island, NY. We are proud to offer our membership the finest in sporting activities, including a nationally ranked C.B. Macdonald golf course, a beach club with pool, trapshooting, and a racquets facility that consists of 16 grass tennis courts, 10 har-tru courts, 3 indoor tennis courts, three singles and one doubles squash courts, two croquet courts, and two paddle tennis courts. There are approved plans to build a new paddle tennis facility with 4 courts and a Paddle Hut, to make the facility tournament ready. Our junior program has produced nationally ranked athletes at the University level.

We are currently seeking a Director of Racquet Sports (DRS) to organize and direct the programs for Tennis, Squash, and Paddle Tennis. This DRS will also own and operate a racquets shop, and be responsible for providing lessons, equipment, and attire for all three sports. The individual will also oversee a fitness facility for use of the membership.

Club has a tradition of excellence in racquet sports. While spirited competition is encouraged, the Club values, above all else, sportsmanship and positive on-court conduct. The DRS will be expected to embody and foster, particularly among juniors, exemplary sportsmanship and humility.

The duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Implementing and directing instructional programs.
  • Providing lessons and clinics relating to the techniques and strategies of racquet sports to members and children.
  • Inspect the courts and facilities on a daily basis prior to the start of play to ensure that all maintenance and grooming has been performed. Report all areas needing attention to the appropriate department head.
  • Organizing, administering, and officiating at tournaments, exhibitions and inter- and intra-club team events.
  • Ensuring that prizes for all tournaments and events are purchased and that trophies and wall plaques are updated.
  • Working closely with Junior Activities Committee and other professionals in helping to administer the summer “Sports Group” program.
  • Maintain the Varsity and J.V. junior tennis program, including summer practices, typically 2-3x per week, and winter practices, as appropriate. Maintain both the tennis and squash junior “ladders” by facilitating individual junior ladder matches and arrange club matches with local clubs throughout the summer.
  • Overseeing the operation and maintenance of equipment in the two Member gymnasiums, which are located in the racquets building.
  • Oversee personal physical trainer’s policy
  • In concert with applicable committees, arrange for timely and accurate communication with members, including drafting and distributing racquet sports-related news for the Club’s newsletter.
  • Manage court assignments and adherence to club policy related to behavior and attire.
  • Promote racquets activities to the membership (i.e. tournaments, exhibitions, clinics, social events, etc.)
  • Develop a detailed annual calendar of racquets activities in coordination with committee heads, general manager, and other head professionals.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with other club professionals.
  • Participate in meetings of the Men’s and Ladies tennis, Squash, and Paddle Tennis Committees regularly.
  • Represent the Club in professional activities at state, local, or national events, with approval from the Club.
  • Work with Food and Beverage management staff to coordinate food and beverage service support for racquet events. Maintain communication with Catering Manager regarding changes and counts.
  • Maintain statistics of court usage, participation, and other metrics to help advance the racquet sports programs.
  • Enforce Club rules and policies regarding racquets participation (attire, guests, and children’s behavior) and require assistant professionals and shop staff to enforce the rules.
  • Provide oversight for the maintenance and general condition of the racquets building (cleanliness, appearance, etc.) in coordination with the Grounds Superintendent and Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Designate a pro to play or fill-in member’s games regardless of skills. Such play is not a chargeable lesson.

The DRS will also own and operate a Racquets Shop on the premises. This will be operated at the DRS discretion, but with input from the General Manager and various racquet committees. The expectations of the shop are to:

  • Recruit, select, hire, train, develop, schedule, manage and evaluate teaching professionals and shop staff, with support from the Club’s Human Resource Director. Foster cooperation among the team while managing work schedules and responsibilities.
  • Ensure that an adequate number of qualified professional teaching staff are employed by, or contracted to, the DRS.
  • Ensure that all club members and guests receive courteous, prompt and professional attention to all their needs.
  • Ensure that the shops (racquets building, grass courts and paddle hut) are properly stocked with appropriate items and inventory, in keeping with the Club’s “whites” rule. Consult with and solicit input from the racquet committees regarding desired merchandise to be sold in the shop.
  • Manage the input of all chits (charges) from the tennis shop into the accounting computer system.
  • Ensure that all employees and contract professionals consistently comply with club’s standards and rules of conduct.
  • Continuously seek ways to increase workflow efficiencies.
  • Help to implement the NorthStar (or a similar) online booking system.

The preferred qualifications for the position are:

  • A certification of Elite or Master Professional instruction in tennis, or Level III or higher Coach Certification in squash.
  • Five years’ experience in tennis instruction to all age groups, along with similar experience in the organization of tournaments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, as well as NorthStar or similar Club Management software.
  • A four-year degree from an accredited university, preferably in the business discipline.
  • Experience in the management or operation of a retail establishment.

We offer a competitive salary, assistance with shop operation expenses, medical, dental, 401(k) with match, and life insurance coverage. We are an equal opportunity employer.
