Director of Racquet Sports
Athletic Club in Bloomfield Hills, MI is looking for a full-time Director of Racquet Sports. Includes generous compensation package including salary, commission and benefits program.

Position Overview:
Athletic Club located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, is recognized as one of the finest suburban racquet clubs in the United States. The club is family-focused and cultivates an environment that fosters healthy and ongoing social and athletic interaction between individuals and families. The Club was established in 1955 by a group of area residents interested in developing a private family club centered on athletics and social events. While the clubhouse was originally built in 1960, the Club has greatly evolved from its early days when It consisted of a cabana, pool, and tennis and squash courts. Today, the club offers sports and activities for all skill levels and age groups. The Club is in full swing, year-round. It hosts several thriving racquet programs, including tennis (on nine clay courts), paddle (on four courts), squash (on five international courts and one doubles court), a top-tier, state-level swimming program, fitness center, and dining and banquet facilities.

Club is looking for a Director of Racquets (DOR) who will bring the tennis and paddle programs to the next level by expanding adult, junior, social and competitive programs to meet the ever-changing needs and demands of the membership. This includes men, women, junior and family programs. Responsible for overall operation of the tennis and paddle programming, pro shop, and staff, the Director of Racquets is a highly visible position requiring strong presence, leadership and communication skills with both members and Club management and staff. The DOR is expected to be the leader of the program by passionately promoting the games of tennis, and paddle. The general roles and responsibilities of the DOR will be to deliver a range of services customarily provided by a USPTA/PTR professional. These services will include, but are not be limited to:
• Being a passionate ambassador for the games of tennis and paddle and requiring the same from each member of the tennis staff
• Assuring consistent, efficient, and seamless daily operation of tennis and paddle operations
• Being a strong “consensus builder,” and having effective skills to reconcile differences and inspire solutions for a better operation and member experience
• Enthusiastically encouraging member participation by planning events to promote participation and member engagement; organizing, scheduling and managing tournaments, clinics, round robins, social events, and other tennis and paddle related activities to maximize members’ access to and enjoyment of the racquets facilities
• Creating comprehensive events and activities to include social, competitive and instructional programming for all levels
• Developing and implementing a top-notch junior program that meets the demand of all junior abilities, which should result in a comprehensive, creative and innovative program from beginners to high performance
• Overseeing departmental programs and services to meet budget objectives and exceed member expectations
• Documenting and reporting to the General Manager successful and/or unsuccessful programs to be used as a reference tool in future event and calendar planning
• Providing private and group lessons to adults and children at all levels and overseeing lessons taught by all professionals
• Coordinating instruction, competitive playing, and team opportunities for an active group of juniors
• Owning and operating high-quality merchandise and retail operation in the Club’s Tennis Pro Shop, representing the desires and expectations of the members
• Overseeing the department to ensure accurate member billing and accurate sales/activity reports
• Attending all Senior Staff, Tennis/Paddle Committee and sub-committee meetings and being responsible for drafting the Tennis Committee agendas in coordination with the General Manager and respective Committee Chair.
• Supervising all teaching professionals, pro shop staff, and seasonal interns (staff size of approximately 7)
• Managing all staff scheduling • Conducting regular staff meetings within the tennis department to ensure effective communications
• Responsibility for the selection, development, and coaching of all department staff
• Preparing tennis promotional items and event results for the website, and club newsletter
• Responsibility for the annual budget process, monthly financial performance and weekly payroll management
• Responsibility for the maintenance of the tennis and paddle courts
• Enforcing all the Club’s Rules and Regulations governing use of the facilities, equipment, dress code and sportsmanship as set forth by the Club

The ideal candidate should be an engaging and polished professional with a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Director of Racquets or Head Tennis Professional in a private club setting. An assistant professional at an extremely successful club and racquets program will be considered. A resume indicating progressively more responsible positions and demonstrating experience in delivering both group and individual instructional programs to players of various age groups and skill levels is required. Specifically, the Club is seeking a racquets professional with the following demonstrable attributes and experience:
• A verifiable motivator and leader who can bring out the best in others by setting clear goals and expectations, holding them accountable for outcomes, by providing consistent feedback, support and through respectful interaction and professionalism
• A history of innovation, and a champion of new ideas and initiatives, looking to consistent improvement of member experiences and operational efficiency
• Exemplary communication (both written and spoken) and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with all committees. The candidate must possess a proven ability to attract, hire, develop and lead a high performing team of professionals
• Excellent organizational, technological and time management skills and be an excellent player
• A history of developing and staging inter-Club events.
• Considerable experience running and organizing successful women’s and junior tennis programs

• Breadth and depth of experience as a tennis professional
• Degree of experience in similar settings
• Demonstrations of technical competence
• Ability to articulate a compelling vision for the future of the Club’s programs

The ideal candidate should have earned a college degree with USPTA/USPTR Master Professional or Elite Professional Certification. The ideal candidate will possess a high level of proficiency in both playing and teaching the sport of Paddle tennis.
