Assistant Men’s Tennis Coach
University in West Lafayette, Indiana is looking for an Assistant Men’s Tennis Coach.
Position Overview:
The Assistant Coach – Men’s Tennis will provide sport program management support to the head coach. You will instruct or coach groups or individuals in the fundamentals of the tennis, demonstrate sport and safety techniques and methods of participation and evaluate student-athletes’ strengths and weaknesses as possible recruit or to improve the athletes’ technique to prepare them for competition. In addition, you will serve as mentor to student-athletes with academic and personal issues and provide functional supervision to temporary student employees.
Responsibilities:
• Observe athletes in practice and training, analyze performance data/statistics and recommend athletes for individual games, competitive events or sport season.
• Collect and analyze tactical/statistical data, and game film of opposing teams and recommend game-day strategies.
• Plan, schedule, organize, and conduct practice sessions.
• Recruit potential student-athletes via telephone calls, letters, emails or home visits; make recommendations regarding whether or not to extend official campus visits and/or athletic grant-in-aid support to head coach.
• Recommend locations and student-athletes to be targeted for future recruitment efforts.
• Partner with strength & conditioning staff and athletic trainers on student-athletes overall physical preparation and health status.
• Assist in planning and developing strength and conditioning programs.
• Review and maintain progress records/stats and recommend changes to achieve desired goals, as necessary.
• Discuss class registration deadlines and follow-up to ensure required paperwork is completed, reports of missed classes or study table hours.
• Partner with Athletics Student Services to identify and monitor academically “at risk” student-athletes.
• Recommend disciplinary action to resolve athletic, academic or behavior problems as they arise.
• Represent Head Coach and/or Intercollegiate Athletics Department at fund-raisers, outings, and alumni events.
• Overload Work: This includes tennis lessons taught at the Tennis Center.
• Assist with teaching classes for the Health and Kinesiology Department. (Classes in the fall and spring semesters. Compensation for the class is handled as an overload through the HK department).
• Schedule and teach private Tennis lessons to faculty, staff and the general public
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree.
• 2 years of coaching or playing experience at the collegiate level or above.
• Knowledge of sport-specific fundamentals, techniques, and safety rules & regulations.
• Ability to analyze, interpret, communicate, and adhere to University, Big Ten Conference, and NCAA policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Excellent communication (oral & written), planning, organizational, interpersonal, interviewing, strength training, and counseling skills.
• Ability to recruit on a national-level, instructs & motivates student-athletes on sport fundamentals, techniques and safety rules & regulations, and provides academic and personal mentoring.
• Ability to influence and build positive relationships among diverse individuals including: student-athletes, parents, coaches, media, faculty, staff, students, and general public.
• Must be able to foster a participative management style that builds teamwork to successfully guide the work of others.
• Must possess a learning orientation to changing technology impacting the sport
• Personal computer and related software skills, e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, data query, Internet, etc.
Preferred:
• Degree field in an area that provides a knowledge base in exercise, physiology or physical performance.
