Director of Women’s Tennis
University in Santa Clara, California is looking for a full-time Director of Women’s Tennis.
Position Overview:
The Director of Women’s Tennis reports to the Senior Associate Athletic Director and is responsible for all aspects of managing a Division I Women’s Tennis program. The Director of Women’s Tennis must understand and promote the mission of the Department of Athletics, as well as the mission, goals, values and educational ideals of University. In addition, the Director of Women’s Tennis is responsible for abiding by all conference and NCAA regulations to ensure departmental compliance.
B. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Manage, motivate, and lead the University Women’s Tennis team in a manner that is consistent with the mission and values of University.
• Establish a written set of aims, goals, objectives, and values for the program in consultation with the Athletic Director (or designee) with an update and review each year.
• Establish and communicate written policies, expectations, standards, and rules for the student-athletes and apply appropriate disciplinary procedures as necessary. This includes adherence to the University’s Student Conduct Code.
• Maintain a safe and healthy environment for the student-athletes.
• Effectively prepare and organize pre-season conditioning programs, practice sessions and game plans.
• Utilize sound, positive teaching techniques in the conduct of games and practice sessions.
• Provide appropriate and necessary guidance, advising, and counseling for the student-athletes.
• Be familiar with the support services available at University that can be utilized to assist the student-athletes.
• Actively support the academic integrity of the University, keeping academics and completion of a degree at the highest priority for the student-athlete.
• Continue to seek professional development opportunities for self and staff related to coaching and recruiting strategies and techniques for the purpose of enhancing the program’s competitiveness.
2. Fulfill all administrative responsibilities of the Women’s Tennis program in an efficient and responsible manner.
• Assist the Sports Medicine staff in performing their assigned functions and abide by all decisions of health services and doctors concerning all medical matters.
• Follow administrative procedures established by the University and the Department of Athletics.
• Follow established University affirmative action and equal opportunity guidelines in the hiring of assistant coaches.
• Consult with administrator in charge of scheduling in all matters related to scheduling contests and facilities.
3. Effectively recruit the best student-athlete within the admissions, financial, and regulatory standards and policies established by the University, WCC, and NCAA.
• Establish a logical and effective recruiting system of letters, calendar, and materials.
• Be knowledgeable of University and federal financial aid policies and procedures.
4. Ensure fiscal responsibility of administering the program’s budget within University and Department guidelines.
• Prepare financial documents in a timely manner, and work with the Department business office to ensure financial responsibility.
• Propose, manage, and monitor annual operating budget. Annually create detailed budget request that includes recruiting, travel, equipment and components.
5. Fully endorse and participate in various fundraising and external relations activities on the sport, Department and University level.
• Play an active role with the Alumni Association, University Development office and the Bronco Bench Foundation for fundraising purposes.
• Cooperate and assist the External Services unit in publicizing and promoting University Athletics.
• Actively enhance a positive image of the University.
6. Abide by all conference and NCAA regulations and assist to ensure departmental compliance.
• Know, understand, and follow all applicable rules and regulations. Ensure that assistant coaches and student-athletes abide by all University, WCC and NCAA rules and regulations.
• Be aware of and abide by all rules of confidentiality.
7. Other duties as assigned.
C. Provides Work Direction
• Supervises assistant and volunteer coaches.
• Assist with directing the efforts of three employees.
D. General Guidelines
• Models the office culture guidelines of the Department of Athletics.
• Is aware of and abides by all NCAA, WCC, and other applicable rules and regulations.
• Sets a positive example of behavior for students and the University community.
• Represents Santa Clara University in the community.
E. Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, education, and experience required or preferred.
This position requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.
1. Knowledge
• Thorough understanding of NCAA regulations and policies related to managing a Division I program.
• Understanding and support of the Jesuit tradition of education and commitment to the fundamental values of service to others, community, and diversity.
2. Skills
• Strong, positive communication skills as a coach, supervisor, and as a member of the Department of Athletics.
3. Abilities
• Ability to create, monitor and manage operating budget with concern for fiscal responsibility and restricted resources.
• Ability to interact with students and fellow coaches in a positive manner.
• Ability to build/maintain relationships within local golf community and courses.
4. Education
• Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
5. Years of Experience
• Minimum of three (3) years coaching experience at the Division I level preferred.
