Tennis Director
Club in Stamford, Connecticut is looking for a Tennis Director.
Position Overview:
The Tennis Director is responsible for all aspects of the Club’s seasonal tennis program, focusing on member engagement, instructional offerings, interclub team management, junior program development, social activities, tournaments, court management, and facility maintenance. Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Management
Organizing, scheduling and managing tennis programs for members of all ages and skill levels that includes, but is not limited to, instructional programs, tournaments, interclub and intraclub teams, and social events.
Maximizing tennis instructional revenues through creative planning and strategies that increase sales while enhancing member participation.
Overseeing the maintenance of eight (8) har-tru tennis courts to insure a first-class playing experience. This includes, but is not limited to, scheduling and supervising the tennis court maintenance contractors and tennis staff in the sweeping, lining and rolling of the tennis courts.
Monitoring and adjusting the tennis court irrigation systems as needed.
Helping to ensure members, employees, and guests are safe on and off the tennis courts by: a) performing daily inspection of the courts, walkways, tennis pavilion, observation decks, and grounds; b) overseeing necessary repairs and/or maintenance to address any safety issues or concerns; c) closing the courts whenever there are any safety issues including, but not limited to, raised court lines & nails, wet and/or slippery surfaces, tree debris, and thunder/lightning; and d) inspecting the courts after maintenance and repairs have been completed to ensure they are safe to play on.
Diligently checking various weather apps when applicable to anticipate incoming rain/storms and, when necessary, planning the delay of programs and events, followed by communicating changes and updates to the impacted members.
Managing the Tennis Pro Shop operation including, but not limited to, merchandising, controlling inventory from receipt to sale, racquet stringing and regripping.
Managing and monitoring the CourtReserve court reservation management platform, and incorporating features and services that will improve the Club member experience.
Hiring, Staffing, Leadership
Recruiting, hiring and retaining qualified tennis professionals and pro shop administrator(s).
Providing training and support to the tennis staff, and conducting periodic staff meetings.
Supervising and directing all tennis professionals in planning and coordinating all tennis instructional programs, lesson plans, and new programs.
Ensuring the entire tennis staff demonstrates the highest level of customer service and hospitality both on and off the courts.
Maintaining personnel files for all tennis employees including, but not limited to, signed employment agreements, required certifications and employment documents, disciplinary reports, and performance reviews.
Finance
Overseeing all tennis Point of Sale (POS) operations to ensure accurate billing and accurate sales/activity reports.
Submitting tennis staff payroll numbers to the General Manager per established deadlines.
Assisting the General Manager and Board Tennis Chairperson with developing the tennis department’s annual budget.
Communication
Promoting all aspects of the tennis program to the Club members accurately and in a timely fashion through: personal face to face conversations; email; the Club website; appropriate social media channels; indoor and outdoor bulletin boards; the court reservation platform; print; phone calls; etc.
Providing the General Manager and Board Tennis Chairperson with monthly financial and participation reports concerning the tennis instructional programs and events.
Providing the General Manager with timely and relevant information and updates for Club website and monthly e-newsletters.
Event Planning
Wearing numerous hats to ensure a seamless and high-quality event experience for all members and guests. This transcends the simplicity of setting a date and showing up to teach; rather it involves hours of planning (i.e. ordering food or selecting a caterer, scheduling staff, ordering prizes), strategic marketing, effective member communication, and most importantly, executing the event to the highest level.
Curating themed tennis mixers, pro exhibitions, member/guest events, and adding interest and energy into Club tournaments.
General Responsibilities
Maintaining a high quality of services for all Club members.
Being sincerely active and visibly interactive with staff, Club members, and guests on a daily basis.
Teaching private and semi-private tennis lessons, group clinics, and team practices for adults and children.
Conducting complimentary evaluations for prospective tennis team members.
Helping Club members find hitting partners, social tennis games, and tournament partners.
Enforcing all Club rules and tennis court rules.
Ensuring all guests have been registered by a Club member prior to play, and billed the guest fee.
Ensuring that all areas of the tennis pavilion and outside deck are always neat and clean.
Ensuring the preparation of the tennis pavilion and courts in advance of all interclub league matches.
Ensuring that the necessary equipment for the maintenance and upkeep of the tennis courts is on hand and properly maintained.
Ensuring the first aid kit in the tennis pavilion is adequately stocked and ice packs are always in the freezer.
Meeting with the General Manager and/or Board Tennis Chairperson as necessary or requested.
Any other duties and tasks that may arise that are not specifically mentioned in any of the above that are integral to managing and maintaining a high quality of tennis services for Club members.
Job Requirements
Minimum of 3 years racquet sports leadership experience within a private club or tennis facility.
Demonstrated ability to develop and manage a diverse tennis program.
Proficiency in teaching tennis.
High level competitive tennis background, preferably with collegiate experience.
Experience mentoring and managing a high-quality racquet sports staff.
Expertise in clay court maintenance and pro shop/retail operations.
Strong leadership and organizational skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work full-time, 6 days per week beginning on or around May 1st and ending on or around September 30th.
