Director of Racquets
Club in Sewickley, Pennsylvania is looking for a Director of Racquets.
Position Overview:
The Opportunity
Under the direction of the General Manager and in close consultation with the Racquets Committee, the Director of Racquets leads all policies, procedures, and programming for Allegheny Country Club’s tennis, paddle tennis, pickleball, and racquets sports portfolio. This position is ultimately responsible for the quality and vitality of every dimension of the racquets program — its facilities, its people, its culture, and its business performance.
Above all, the Director of Racquets is an enthusiastic, member-first ambassador for the Club’s racquets sports and someone whose presence on the courts, in the pro shop, and throughout the Club is felt as warmly and consistently as their expertise. Gracious hospitality is not a footnote to this role; it is its foundation.
Key Responsibilities
Culture
The Director of Racquets is the tone-setter for the entire racquets experience at ACC. Every interaction, from a lesson with a junior member to a conversation at the pro shop counter, is an opportunity to deepen member loyalty and reflect the Club’s values.
• Foster and model a culture of gracious hospitality and genuine care for every member, guest, and staff interaction within the Racquets department.
• Maintain a highly visible, engaged presence during activity hours; devote meaningful time each week to playing alongside members of all skill levels — not as instruction, but as relationship-building.
• Uphold and champion the Club’s standards for presentation and ambiance; ensure all racquets facilities, courts, and common areas are impeccably maintained and exceed member expectations from a visual standpoint at all times.
• Enthusiastically promote participation across all racquets disciplines by bringing energy, creativity, and a member-first spirit to every program, event, and daily interaction.
• Actively solicit member feedback on programming, facilities, and overall racquets experience; use that input to continuously elevate the quality of the program.
Leadership
The Director leads not only the Racquets department but also shapes the broader culture and direction of the Club’s racquets identity — partnering with Club leadership and the Racquets Committee to advance a shared vision.
• Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Racquets Committee, advise on rules, court etiquette, and programming priorities; prepare meeting agendas and maintain accurate meeting minutes.
• Attend all applicable staff, management, financial, and Racquets Committee meetings.
• Consult with management to interpret and enforce Club and departmental policies, procedures, and court assignments in a manner that is consistent, fair, and member-focused.
• Design and deliver a dynamic year-round calendar of tournaments, clinics, social events, leagues, and camps that drives participation and enriches the member experience across all ages and skill levels.
• Actively contribute to the planning and execution of short- and long-range facility improvements, including meaningful collaboration on the new racquets complex development.
• Partner with the Special Events Director to coordinate all racquets-related social and event programming.
• Champion the racquets program through the Club’s newsletter, website, email communications, and social media by telling the story of the program in a way that engages current members and attracts prospective ones.
• Engage with the broader racquets community (USPTA, PTR, APTA, and peer clubs) to stay current on industry trends, programming best practices, and emerging disciplines such as Padel.
• Collaborate with the Membership team to provide court demonstrations, introductory sessions, or program previews for prospective members.
Team Building
A strong racquets program is built on a strong team. The Director cultivates a staff culture that mirrors the member experience: welcoming, professional, and deeply committed to excellence.
• Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate all Racquets department personnel, including assistant professionals and pro shop staff.
• Ensure appropriate staff coverage during all operational hours, including scheduling assistant professionals when the Director is unavailable, so that member service is never interrupted.
• Mentor and develop assistant staff, cultivating their technical skills, professional growth, and alignment with the Club’s service philosophy.
• Coordinate junior programming, family events, and camp weeks in close collaboration with other athletic departments, ensuring a seamless and enriching experience for junior members and their families.
• Foster a cohesive, motivated team culture grounded in accountability, service excellence, and shared pride in the racquets program.
Expertise
The Director brings elite technical knowledge to the court and shares it generously — through instruction, equipment guidance, and a teaching philosophy that honors the Club’s values and elevates every player.
• Deliver high-quality private and group lessons and clinics for members of all ages and skill levels, maintaining a teaching philosophy consistent with the Club’s values and traditions.
• Oversee all instructional programming led by the Assistant Director and seasonal staff professionals, ensuring consistency, quality, and a member-first approach across every offering.
• Advise members on racquet and equipment selection; perform racquet stringing and equipment repair with the care and expertise that reflects the Club’s standards.
• Manage all aspects of the racquets pro shop, including inventory curation, purchasing, sales, and daily operations, with an eye toward the products and services that best serve the ACC membership.
• Maintain current certifications and a high level of personal playing ability in tennis and paddle tennis; model the standard of play and professionalism the program represents.
Administrative
Sound administration is the backbone of an exceptional member experience. The Director manages the business of the Racquets department with the same rigor and care applied to every other aspect of the role.
• Lead the annual budget development process and maintain disciplined fiscal management of the racquets department throughout the year.
• Oversee court fee collection and all racquets-related revenue; coordinate with the Club’s Accounting Department to ensure accurate and timely processing.
• Manage the care and condition of all racquets facilities and coordinate maintenance, repair, and improvement efforts with supporting departments to ensure courts and amenities always meet the Club’s standards.
• Manage court scheduling and assignments for members and guests in accordance with established Club policies and procedures.
• Coordinate the collection and distribution of prizes and awards for all competitions.
• Maintain thorough and organized records related to matches, tournaments, programming schedules, and all other departmental activities.
• Adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing health, safety, and employment.
• Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by the General Manager.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in physical education, Sports Management, or a related field strongly preferred.
• Minimum of five years’ experience as a Director of Racquets, Director of Tennis, or Assistant Director of Racquets with a demonstrated trajectory toward a director-level role.
• Experience in racquets retail operations, junior programming, and court and facility maintenance.
• USPTA Professional Certification (or higher) or PTR Professional Certification (or higher).
• USPTA Platform Professional Certification or higher.
• Demonstrated high-level playing ability in both tennis and paddle tennis.
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with a genuine ability to connect with members, guests, and staff of all ages and backgrounds.
• A hospitality-first mindset with a demonstrable passion for elevating the member experience.
• Honest, ethical, collaborative, and optimistic, with the work ethic and professionalism to lead by example every day.
